Martin A. Clayman, senior member of Clayman, Tapper & Baram, LLC, has more than 45 years of experience in commercial litigation and business transactions. He devotes a significant part of his practice to entity formation and regulatory compliance, commercial leasing and commercial financing transactions. Included among his business clients are commercial and residential real estate developers, entrepreneurs and a variety of business entities and not-for-profit organizations for whom he has provided legal counsel and representation in complex financial and business transactions.
Marty's experience as a litigator, coupled with his many years of business law experience, enables him to engage in commercial litigation both in federal and state courts. He is also an active participant in alternative dispute resolution matters having more than 30 years experience with mediation and arbitration. He currently serves on the arbitration panels of the American Arbitration Association and the American Dispute Resolution Center and Alternative Dispute Resolution Center.
Founder of the Franchise Law Section of the Connecticut Bar Association and former Chairman of its Executive Committee, he is very active in the practice of Franchise Law. He is an active member of the Forum Committee on Franchising of the American Bar Association. In addition, he frequently lectures and writes articles in the areas of business and franchise law. Marty represents local, regional and national franchisors and franchisees who have come to rely on his experience in navigating the complex regulations which govern this particular industry. Evaluation, analysis and implementation of franchise opportunities, preparation of franchise documents, compliance with state and federal laws and franchise litigation are but a few of the services he provides for franchise clients.
In conjunction with his franchise practice, he practices federal and state trademark law which enables him to better serve his franchise as well as his general business clients. He has been selected by his peers to be included in the 2007 edition of Woodward/White Inc.’s The Best Lawyers in America® in the area of Franchise Law and he has been selected by his peers to be included in the Super Lawyer section of New York magazine.
After graduating from Loomis-Chaffee Institute in Windsor, Connecticut, he attended Yale University where he received his B.A. degree. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1962 and is a member of the Connecticut and American Bar Associations. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.
